What is hearing loss?
Hearing loss is a sudden or gradual decrease in your ability to hear. Depending on the cause, hearing loss can range from miild to profound and can be temporary or permanent.
How do you know whether you or someone you know might benefit from hearing aids?
- Frustration from not clearly understanding others
- Trouble understanding speech when background noise is present
- Embarrassment from being unable to hear when meeting other people.
- Family or friends often have to repeat what they say
- Tinnitus
- Reading lips so you can try to follow what people are saying
- Trouble understanding speech on TV at normal control levels
Four levels of hearing loss:
Mild |
Soft sounds are hard to hear. Understanding speech clearly in noisy environments may be challenging. |
Moderate |
Soft and moderately loud sounds are hard to hear. It's often difficult to understand speech, especially when there's background noise. |
Severe |
Some loud sounds are audible, but communication without a hearing instrument is impossible. |
Profound |
Some extremely loud sounds are audible. Communication without a hearing instrument is impossible. |
